Attorney Kristy Figueroa-Contreras’ practice is limited to all aspects of immigration nationality and consular law, as well as criminal defense of persons accused of a wide range of felony and misdemeanor offenses. She has criminal trial experience, making her particularly well-versed in the complex and ever-changing interplay between criminal law and immigration laws and procedures. Much of her practice is devoted to representing non-citizens facing criminal charges in both state and federal criminal courts, as well as those with criminal convictions in their immigration court and consular proceedings.
Attorney Figueroa-Contreras received her law degree (Juris Doctor) from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. She completed a judicial clerkship with a trial judge (Juez de Instrucción) on the federal criminal court in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she also completed graduate-level coursework in Latin American Legal Systems and Comparative Criminal Law at the Universidad del Salvador, Facultad de Ciencias Jurídicas and clerked at Baker & McKenzie’s Buenos Aires office, where our Firm´s Founding Partner Ronaldo A. Negri acted as her supervisor.
In addition to her law degree, Ms. Figueroa-Contreras holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French (Modern Languages), both With Honors, from Florida International University in Miami, Florida.
Prior to joining our law firm in 2006, attorney Figueroa-Contreras worked as an associate at several South Florida law firms, focusing on criminal defense, immigration and complex commercial litigation matters.
Attorney Figueroa-Contreras admitted to practice in every immigration court in the United States, as well as before the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), the Administrative Appeals Office (AAO) and the Board of Labor Certification Appeals (BALCA). She is also admitted to practice in all Florida state courts and in federal court in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Her other professional memberships include the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild (NIPNLG), the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (FACDL), the Federal Bar Association (FBA), the Cuban-American Bar Association (CABA) and the American Translator’s Association (ATA). Ms. Figueroa-Contreras is currently serving on the ICE-Investigations (HSI) Committee for AILA´s South Florida Chapter and is a member of AILA´s Federal Court Litigation Section.
